One of Japan’s Best Hidden Vegan Gems: Bugoro in Fukuoka
A Secret Vegan Spot in Fukuoka
Tucked away down a narrow alley behind the Fukuoka City Science Museum, Bugoro is housed inside a tiny folk-style home that blends seamlessly with the surrounding residential buildings. The only clue to its presence is a simple white banner hanging outside that reads: “ALL VEGAN” in English.
Step inside and you'll find one of the most authentic and personal vegan experiences in Japan - with seating for just three people. There’s a small table for one and a tight window bar with two stools. This minimalist space sets the tone for something truly unique.
Vegan Ramen Like No Other
Bugoro was opened in 2023 by Keiko Mitsuo, who acts as the chef, hostess, and owner. She prepares every dish herself from scratch, behind a curtain that separates the tiny kitchen from the dining space.
Keiko’s specialty is Vegan Hakata-Style Ramen, a plant-based twist on a dish traditionally made with rich, pork-based broth. She also serves an incredible Tantanmen Ramen, made with spicy Sichuan peppercorns, sesame paste, and deep, layered flavors.
Every dish is organic, homemade, and absolutely packed with flavour - some of the best vegan ramen in Japan we’ve had the pleasure to try.
The Full Experience
Bugoro offers a set meal experience that includes your choice of ramen, along with traditional Japanese sweets and a drink. The menu is small and seasonal, with an emphasis on quality and craft.
Expect to pay around ¥3,500 JPY (approx. £18) per person - a fair price for such a rare and handcrafted plant-based experience.
There’s also a small shelf at the back of the restaurant where you can purchase vegan noodles, condiments, and other handpicked pantry goods.
How to Book Your Visit
Due to its size, reservations are required and can be made through Keiko’s website:
